This study examined the roles of cognitive vulnerability and emotion dysregulation in hypochondriacal and social anxiety symptoms. On the basis of cognitive models of and earlier studies on emotional disorders including anxiety disorders, the model in which cognitions relevant to body sensation and sensitivity to negative evaluation would be specific predictors of hypochondriacal and social anxiety symptoms, respectively and emotion dysregulation would be common predictor of both symptoms, was proposed(Model 1). One alternative model in which cognitions relevant to body sensation would be a specific predictor of hypochondriacal symptoms and both sensitivity to negative evaluation and emotion dysregulation would be specific predictors of social anxiety symptoms, was specified(Model 2). Structural equating modeling(SEM) approach was conducted to evaluate the goodness-of-fit of the two models in a sample of 434 university students. SEM revealed that both of the two models fit the data adequately, and Model 2 was superior to Model 1. These findings indicated that whereas cognitions relevant to body sensation was a specific predictor of hypochondriacal symptoms, both sensitivity to negative evaluation and emotion dysregulation were specific predictors of social anxiety symptoms. Furthermore, they suggest the importance of considering the role of cognitions relevant to body sensation in order to treat nonclinical young adults' hypochondriacal symptoms and the role of sensitivity to negative evaluation and emotion dysregulation in order to treat their social anxiety symptoms.
