This paper tried to find out the various changes of modern Korean ‘밖에' through
the literature data. First, ‘뜻밖에’ includes medieval languages, and until the 17th
century, ‘’ and ‘밧긔’ were not a word but a syntactic composition. In the 18th
century recent Korean language, it was a time when the syntactic composition and
the morphological composition were mixed, but by the end of the 19th century, it
became a word. Postposition ‘밖에’ is classified into the case where the preceding
words are independent nouns and bound nouns. After the independent noun, there
existed only as a lexical meaning ‘outside of -’ in the period of medieval Korean.
In the 17th century, it shows the appearance of the postposition in Korean, but it
shows a stiffness in the 19th century. And the postposition ‘밖에’ behind the
dependent nouns appears suddenly in the 19th century. It is the ‘수밖에’ that is
associated with the bound noun ‘수’, and its root is the ‘-ㄹ 밖에 슈가 없다’. In
this case, ‘-ㄹ 밖에’ is composed of bound nouns, in the process of combining with
‘슈’, self-supporting noun ‘슈’ is abstracted as bound noun and ‘밖에’ is changed
as postposition. Finally, the origin of the ending '-ㄹ밖에' was found in '-ㄹ#밧긔',
a syntactic construct that appeared in the 18th century.
