This paper has aimed to explore futuristic directions and strategies for Arts and
Physical Education throughout the free semester system in middle schools. The free
semester system has provided four programs such as career exploration activity, club
activity, students-selective activity, and Arts & Physical Education activity(APEA).
Unlike the three activities, the APEA has been established from Arts & Physical
education as one of the common curriculum in the national level. For this reason, the
APEA program should serve unique and educational roles that are differentiated with
Arts & Physical Education within the common curriculum. However, the APEA has
not been performed these original roles according to curriculum document analysis in
the free semester system for two years. In addition, little academic discourse has
been made to effectively establish the APEA. To solve those limitations, 80
curriculum documents have been analyzed to investigate the current situation of the
APEA that is ahead from formal implementation of the free semester system in 2016.
Also, there has been explored the educational characteristics of the APEA in terms of
educational content, instructional method, teaching place & material for better APEA
programs throughout the free semester system. Finally, futuristic directions,
objectives and strategies are discussed in order to facilitate the APEA throughout the
free semester system.
